Hujar died in 1987 from AIDS-related illness; Deschenes began her career in the early 1990s. That their work now enters into dialogue at the Gropius Bau is the result of a curatorial decision, and a compelling one. Despite working in fundamentally different visual languages and across generations, both share a deep interest in the material possibilities of photography and the role of beauty. Hujar sought direct, uncomplicated images of complicated subjects. Deschenes interrogates the medium itself \u2013 light, chemistry, time \u2013 and asks what photography can be.<\/p><p class=\\\"_Standard20pxWhite\\\">Hujar worked in New York between the rise of the Gay Liberation Movement in the 1960s and the outbreak of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. His haunting black-and-white portraits capture a queer, artistic world that no longer exists: Candy Darling, Susan Sontag, David Wojnarowicz photographed with emotional depth and formal rigor. They are extraordinary records of a moment brought to an irreversible end by the AIDS crisis. Deschenes, who lives and works in New York, creates sculptures and non-representational photographic works, including camera-less photograms made in moonlight that continue to evolve through chemical oxidation after the exhibition closes. For her, photography can do far more than capture a single moment. identity that makes the contrast between both positions tangible. A black-and-white portrait by Hujar is set against typography in a bold purple drawn from Deschenes\u2019 color palette. The exhibition graphics follow this restraint closely, staying in line with the Gropius Bau\u2019s corporate identity: black wall texts, reduced black-and-white object labels, and large-scale background information on the people depicted and places significant to Hujar. Hujar died in 1987 from AIDS-related illness; Deschenes began her career in the early 1990s. That their work now enters into dialogue at the Gropius Bau is the result of a curatorial decision, and a compelling one. Despite working in fundamentally different visual languages and across generations, both share a deep interest in the material possibilities of photography and the role of beauty. Hujar sought direct, uncomplicated images of complicated subjects. Deschenes interrogates the medium itself \u2013 light, chemistry, time \u2013 and asks what photography can be.<\/p><p class=\\\"_Standard20pxWhite\\\">Hujar worked in New York between the rise of the Gay Liberation Movement in the 1960s and the outbreak of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. His haunting black-and-white portraits capture a queer, artistic world that no longer exists: Candy Darling, Susan Sontag, David Wojnarowicz photographed with emotional depth and formal rigor. They are extraordinary records of a moment brought to an irreversible end by the AIDS crisis. Deschenes, who lives and works in New York, creates sculptures and non-representational photographic works, including camera-less photograms made in moonlight that continue to evolve through chemical oxidation after the exhibition closes. For her, photography can do far more than capture a single moment. A black-and-white portrait by Hujar is set against typography in a bold purple drawn from Deschenes\u2019 color palette. The exhibition graphics follow this restraint closely, staying in line with the Gropius Bau\u2019s corporate identity: black wall texts, reduced black-and-white object labels, and large-scale background information on the people depicted and places significant to Hujar.
