The artwork fell victim to a bomb strike on May 19, 1944, shattering during the complete destruction of the National Gallery\u2019s staircase. Miraculously, the torso of the statue was salvaged from the rubble. Two translucent banners show large-format black and white photographs, vividly contrasting the sculpture in its original, untouched state in situ and the poignant aftermath following its recovery, now The artwork fell victim to a bomb strike on May 19, 1944, shattering during the complete destruction of the National Gallery\u2019s staircase. Miraculously, the torso of the statue was salvaged from the rubble. Two translucent banners show large-format black and white photographs, vividly contrasting the sculpture in its original, untouched state in situ and the poignant aftermath following its recovery, now
