The first special exhibition at the \u201cHotel Silber\u201d in Stuttgart examines the complicated legal process surrounding the crimes of the Gestapo (Secret State Police). As result of the investigation into Nazi crimes, only a few members of the Gestapo were convicted and brought to justice. \u201cGestapo on Trial. The Persecution of Nazi Crim(e\/inals)s\u201d is a journey into the abyss of Nazi terror and its consequences, which still shape Germany\u2019s understanding of guilt, justice and historical responsibility today. The Hotel Silber was used by the police for more than half a century; between 1933 and 1945 it was the W\u00fcrttemberg headquarters of the Gestapo. A blue grid developed by b\u00fcroberlin runs through the exhibition, symbolizing the network of the Gestapo. As an expansive sculpture, the grid permeates the entire building, occupying it like a parasite. Starting from the center of the room, it creates passages and views. Portrait photographs on metal panels are placed into the three-dimensional structure at different heights and depths. They depict members of the Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg Gestapo who stood trial after the Nazi era, their cases at the center of the exhibition. The photographs\u2019 cold materiality is reminiscent of the crimes committed. As they move through the space, visitors become part of the grid. Is it possible to distance oneself from the perpetrators? Next to the grid, white tables present court cases, from indictments to investigations and testimony to verdicts. To introduce each case, a red display in the form of an open book provides the case\u2019s legal text, either in the original or as a reproduction for browsing. The challenge was to showcase mainly text-based exhibits in an easy to understand, engaging way. Interactive elements like keywords at the top of the tables help viewers contextualize the information. Display cases contain a variety of artifacts: documents, files, photographs, infographics, transcribed excerpts, videos, and interviews. The first special exhibition at the \u201cHotel Silber\u201d in Stuttgart examines the complicated legal process surrounding the crimes of the Gestapo (Secret State Police). As result of the investigation into Nazi crimes, only a few members of the Gestapo were convicted and brought to justice. \u201cGestapo on Trial. The Persecution of Nazi Crim(e\/inals)s\u201d is a journey into the abyss of Nazi terror and its consequences, which still shape Germany\u2019s understanding of guilt, justice and historical responsibility today. The Hotel Silber was used by the police for more than half a century; between 1933 and 1945 it was the W\u00fcrttemberg headquarters of the Gestapo. A blue grid developed by b\u00fcroberlin runs through the exhibition, symbolizing the network of the Gestapo. As an expansive sculpture, the grid permeates the entire building, occupying it like a parasite. Starting from the center of the room, it creates passages and views. Portrait photographs on metal panels are placed into the three-dimensional structure at different heights and depths. They depict members of the Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg Gestapo who stood trial after the Nazi era, their cases at the center of the exhibition. The photographs\u2019 cold materiality is reminiscent of the crimes committed. As they move through the space, visitors become part of the grid. Is it possible to distance oneself from the perpetrators?
